Building Industry Awards
BIA Annual Awards
The BIA now has two annual award programs to
honor its members. Each year at the Inaugural Celebration in December,
members of the BIA are recognized for their contributions to the industry or the
association. This program includes awards such as the Builder, Remodeler and
Associate of the Year. 2005 marked the first annual Building Industry
Awards program in October which recognized Developers, Subcontactors, Suppliers,
Architects and more. The Hall of Fame, which is the highest honor a BIA
member can receive, was introduced and six business leaders were inducted.

Next Generation Builder of the Year
2006 Zenios Michael
Zenios, 3 Pillar Homes - The Next Generation
Builder award winner was a son of a builder. He learned every facet of the
construction business from watching the master craftsmen of his father’s
business while growing up. He ventured to the U. S. to earn a degree and for
spending money, he built his first home at age 24 while pursuing a Master’s
Degree in Business Administration from Franklin University. Only in existence
nine short years, this home building operation has gone from building one home
per year to over thirty seven homes per year with gross sales of over ten
million dollars. Recent achievements include national recognition in Builder
Magazine, listed in Business First Fast Fifty list for the second consecutive
year, named to the list of top twenty five home builders in Columbus and named a
finalist for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2004. He has served
on the BIA Board of Trustees, BIA Education Committee and is a member of the
Builder 20 Club. Even though his original intention was to return to Greece and
to his father’s business, he has chosen to remain in Columbus and continue in
the home building industry. He founded a building company that epitomizes its
name and is based on three pillars of Excellence; Honor, Quality and Design

2006 SCHOTTENSTEIN
REAL ESTATE GROUP - Walk into the offices of
this development company and the emphasis is on the homebuyers and the variety
of products offered to them. Concentration is focused on how to make the
customers happy and proud of where they live. Thirty plus years of experience
have gone into developing, building, marketing and managing condominium and
apartment communities throughout the Central Ohio area. An amazing 8000 plus
units have been successfully completed by this executive team. They are both
experienced and reputable leaders of the development business community. All
members of the company are active in both the industry and community.
Participation includes CondoQuest, Sales and Marketing Council among others. In
2005, they were multi category winners of the BIA MAME awards – for Marketing
and Merchandise Excellence. In 2005, sales of new condominiums and existing
rental properties equaled 276 closings and forty three million dollars in sales
volume. The conversion of existing apartment communities for sale helped
contribute greatly to the success of this company in 2005. The company was built
on integrity, solid ethics, and fair treatment of homeowners, residents,
suppliers and contractors alike.

Development of the Year
2006 Harbor Point at
Heron Bay, Lakeside Construction - This award
winning development broke ground in early 2005 and had a finished model complete
by July. A total of 69 condominium units ranging from two stories, Cape Cod to
ranch style condos would ultimately encompass this intimate waterfront village.
The style and atmosphere are reflective of the coastal resort architecture that
is commonly found along the east coast from Maine to South Carolina. Located
only 25 minutes east of downtown, Harbor Point at Heron Bay is nestled at the
southeast corner of Buckeye Lake, which is the largest body of water in Central
Ohio sprawling over seven miles across three counties. Site amenities include
recreational facilities such as swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts and
a walking trail. For the boating enthusiasts – there are boat slips for each
unit on the private inlet. The resort community is suited for those who want a
permanent water front residence to those wishing for a home away from home
experience.

Remodeling Project of the Year
2006 Forrester Construction Co
- Every remodeling project has its own unique set of challenges and this award
winner is no exception. The scope of the remodeling project included replacing a
twenty year old deteriorating deck and hot tub with a new multi-level structure.
No easy feat itself but on top of that the finished project was to look like it
was built around an existing boulder landscape and natural spring waterfall. The
unique challenges posed for the remodeler included being located on Riverside
Drive, all the work was performed on the back side of the house, the grade fell
away from the home at an incredible forty five degree slope, all the concrete
had to be pumped over, yes I said over the existing home. The boulders weighed
from one half to three tons each and had to be individually placed to create a
natural looking environment and waterfall. A swimming pool was converted to
resemble a pond. The decking, stairs and handrails were to be a hardwood from
South America called IPE’ or Iron Wood. All fasteners, flashing, screws, and
anchor bolts were specified to be stainless steel. This project will retain its
integrity for a minimum of one hundred years with minimal maintenance.
2006 Renovations Unlimited
- The modernization of this 1960’s colonial included extensive updates and
expansion of several areas of the home. The renovation project included a
kitchen addition, family room that was designed with special consideration of
audio and video presentations and a master suite retreat at the north end of the
home. Open vistas extended across the kitchen and family room. The remodeling
allowed several rooms to take advantage of distinct and dramatic views of the
river front landscape. The new additions included mudroom, dual laundry areas, a
butler’s pantry, half bath exercise room, screened porch, and remodeled office.
Many of these rooms were located in a space that was previously part of the
garage. The project retained and renovated many elements of the existing home
while sensitively adding new complimentary features. The project took over eight
months to complete and captured Best of Show honors at this year’s Showcase of
Remodeled Homes. |

Superintendent/Production Manager of the Year
2006 Phil Hill, Tuckerman
Home Group - Exceeding expectations is what
sets this next award winner apart. Without any hesitation, going the extra mile
is incorporated as the norm and becomes routine for this individual. His
construction supervision is keen although his post construction service strictly
adheres to the same high standards. He manages between 5-9 custom homes at any
given time throughout the year. His work attendance is impeccable and his hands
on approach serves him, the company and homeowners well. He worked on a home for
the 2006 Parade and finished well ahead of schedule and ahead of the
competition. The house for the Tuckerman Home Group was the first to be
completed and it was their first participation in a Parade. I have to say, that
both the BIA and builder were very impressed with this accomplishment.

Landscape Design of the Year
2006 GreenScapes Landscape Co.
- This company has become synonymous for one-stop shopping in the landscaping
arena. Their services include landscape design with a talented team of
professionals, representation at zoning meetings, landscape installation, and
coordination with a multitude of subcontractors. They have expanded their
services to include entryway signage, design and install “tot lots” and
landscape any development areas that are of need. They also assist, recommend
and install shade trees located in right of ways. Getting the job done right is
important, but they go beyond that by providing superior customer service for
their clients. The anticipation and accommodation of the builders’ needs along
with simplified project coordination allows the builder to hand select special
plants where appropriate. With all this attention to all aspects of a job, its
very easy to see why a builder submitted them for this honor. GreenScapes does
all this and more to ensure the project is completed on time and on budget. They
are committed to taking measures to save their clients time, effort and
aggravation by providing a smooth job execution and completion. Their works have
captured Parade of Homes honors, a multi award winner of the Ohio Nursery and
Landscape Association, as well as Ohio Landscape Association, Color Columbus and
Home and Garden show. |
